Reading Reflection 3

I read “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” by Peter Drucker

1.         What was the general theme or argument of the book
a.         The main argument of the book is that entrepreneurship should be taught as a behavior instead of a personality trait. It can be learned and strengthened with more practice. He says that entrepreneurship and innovation is a systematic discipline in which we search for changes and try to interpret how these changes lead to innovative opportunities. They must be made a normal ongoing and everyday activity.
2.         How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT3003?
a.         It clearly correlates to many things we have learned because in many assignments we have had to talk about how our product/service is innovative and how we plan on innovating it even more. I think that in this class I have had to think like an entrepreneur all the time and it actually has made me have this mindset in my daily life. I started constantly thinking about problems people have and what could be good ways to solve them.
3.         If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
a.         The exercise would be sitting in a public place, maybe the library or a park, and just observing the daily habits of people. You would observe the problems people encounter and what they are doing to try to fix them. This put students in an entrepreneur mindset in day to day activities. They could also relate their business plan to one of the strategies discussed in chapter three of the book.
4.         What was your biggest surprise or ‘aha’ moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that different most from your expectations?
a.         My biggest ‘aha’ moment came when I read his line “failure should always be considered a symptom of an innovative opportunity and taken seriously as such”. This is so true and made me realize that failure is a learning experience and how his perspective on failure shows that one needs to improve.
